emirates7 - The Emirates Water and Electricity Company (EWEC) has announced the opening of registration for its Clean Energy Certificates (CECs) auction for Q4 2024, with the auction set to conclude on December 13, 2024.
Othman Al Ali, CEO of EWEC, highlighted the importance of the initiative, stating, “The Clean Energy Certificates program is a key component of the UAE’s efforts to reduce carbon emissions. This globally recognized scheme allows stakeholders to actively contribute to Abu Dhabi and the UAE’s clean energy objectives, aligning with our collective net-zero ambitions.
As we mark the UAE’s Year of Sustainability, we’ve seen strong interest from various critical economic sectors. This has facilitated new strategic collaborations and strengthened existing partnerships, driving meaningful progress towards a sustainable future. We encourage organizations to participate in the upcoming auction and take decisive steps to decarbonize their operations.”
CECs, issued by the Abu Dhabi Department of Energy, are measured in units of 1 megawatt-hour (MWh) and certify that the electricity consumed by the redeeming entity in Abu Dhabi is generated from renewable or clean energy sources.
This scheme adheres to the internationally recognized standards set by the International Renewable Energy Certificate Standard Foundation (I-REC Standard). It remains the sole accredited mechanism for verifying ownership of the environmental and economic advantages of consuming clean energy, thereby affirming an entity’s green credentials.
