emirates7 - The World Leaders Climate Action Summit, part of the 29th Conference of the Parties (COP29), officially began today in Baku, Azerbaijan.
The opening ceremony was attended by Heads of State and Government, party delegations, distinguished guests invited by the Government of Azerbaijan, leaders of the United Nations and affiliated organisations, as well as representatives from specialised agencies, intergovernmental organisations, and non-governmental constituencies.
The summit underscores the critical need for global leaders to strengthen their commitment to reducing emissions, adapting to climate change, and addressing loss and damage.
This initiative aims to translate key climate decisions into actionable strategies and credible plans to combat climate change, building on the milestones of COP28 and the landmark “UAE Consensus.”
The UAE Consensus includes a groundbreaking commitment to transitioning away from all fossil fuels in energy systems in a fair, systematic, and equitable manner during this decisive decade, aligning with global efforts to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. It also introduces a concrete target to triple renewable energy capacity and double energy efficiency by 2030.
