emirates7 - The General Women's Union (GWU) took part in the high-level meeting of the Network of Women Ministers and Leaders in Information and Communication Technology (ICT) held in Geneva on Wednesday, as part of the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS+20) Forum.
The GWU’s involvement aligns with the UAE’s continuous efforts to bolster international cooperation in advancing women’s digital empowerment.
During the forum, the GWU and the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) signed a joint declaration in the presence of Noura Khalifa Al Suwaidi, Secretary-General of the GWU, and Doreen Bogdan-Martin, Secretary-General of the ITU.
This declaration aims to strengthen collaboration to empower women and girls with digital skills and promote technological progress.
The partnership is rooted in the shared commitment of both organizations to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), especially Goal 5, which focuses on achieving gender equality. It seeks to boost women's engagement in the digital economy through multiple areas, including developing digital skills for women and girls, encouraging girls to pursue STEM education, and exchanging best practices regionally and internationally.
Al Suwaidi highlighted that this international collaboration reflects the UAE’s visionary leadership and the directives of H.H. Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak, “Mother of the Nation,” Chairwoman of the GWU, President of the Supreme Council for Motherhood and Childhood, and Supreme Chairwoman of the Family Development Foundation.
She noted that the agreement provides a valuable platform to partner with a leading UN organization, supporting the expansion of initiatives aimed at enhancing women’s and girls’ digital capabilities.
Al Suwaidi added, “At the General Women’s Union, we take pride in actively contributing to building an inclusive and secure digital environment that empowers women to play a vital role in social and economic development through close cooperation with our international partners.”
Similarly, the ITU Secretary-General stated, “This declaration with the General Women’s Union demonstrates our shared dedication to supporting women and girls in the digital space, especially those in remote and underserved areas, helping them acquire the skills, confidence, and mentorship needed to build their future careers.”
Eng. Ghalya Ali Al Mannaee, Chairwoman of Strategic Affairs and Development at the GWU, remarked that signing this agreement underscores the GWU’s commitment to harnessing international partnerships to support women’s digital transformation locally and globally.
She further emphasized, “Digital empowerment is crucial in the age of artificial intelligence and advanced technologies. Through this partnership, we aim to develop impactful initiatives to enhance digital skills among women and girls, creating new opportunities in entrepreneurship, scientific research, and digital decision-making.”
The agreement’s signing highlights the GWU’s dedication to expanding its role in pioneering global initiatives, supporting the UAE’s strategy for digital empowerment of women, and its efforts to foster an inclusive and sustainable digital society that strengthens women’s roles.
