DSQC recalls Sharjah Ruler’s University of Coimbra honorary doctorate

emirates7 - The Dr Sultan Al Qasimi Centre (DSQC) has revisited a key moment in the academic legacy of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, who received an honorary doctorate from the University of Coimbra in Portugal in October 2018.

This prestigious recognition was granted in honour of Sheikh Sultan’s lifelong dedication to the fields of history, literature, and cultural studies. His in-depth research has illuminated pivotal historical events and the evolution of human civilizations. The university praised him as “the man who brings cultures together.”

Founded in 1290, the University of Coimbra is Portugal’s oldest university and one of the most historic institutions in Europe. It holds a prominent status as a centre of academic excellence and was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2013. The honorary doctorate is its most esteemed accolade, awarded to individuals with exceptional achievements in the realms of culture, literature, or science.

Over the centuries, only 190 eminent individuals from Portugal and beyond have received this honour, among them UN Secretary-General António Guterres and former European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker.

In his remarks at the award ceremony, His Highness praised the university’s commitment to advancing cultural dialogue and fostering international cooperation.
