Sharjah Ruler reviews expansion plans for University of Al Dhaid projects

emirates7 - His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah and President of the University of Al Dhaid, commended the University’s Board of Trustees for their accomplishments during the previous period.

H.H. Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed highlighted that many institutions initiate projects in agricultural sciences and food security but often encounter difficulties due to the lack of adequate facilities to support academic studies. Consequently, students receive mostly theoretical education and have to seek practical training abroad.

This statement was made during the University of Al Dhaid Board of Trustees meeting, chaired by His Highness on Wednesday morning at the university headquarters.

He emphasized that the University of Al Dhaid offers all essential resources to provide students with both theoretical knowledge and practical experience. This is facilitated through specialized colleges and programs, such as the College of Agriculture and the College of Veterinary Medicine, as well as supporting facilities like laboratories, farms, and animal pens.

The President of the University noted that these initiatives have played a major role in producing organic products free from artificial additives and chemicals, available in markets under brands like Mleiha dairy, GHERAS products, and Sabaa Sanabel wheat. The Sharjah Ruler expressed pride that these products originate from the UAE, specifically Sharjah.

H.H. Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed also shared that he began collecting seeds in 1973, categorizing seeds including those from plants now extinct in the country’s deserts. He founded a seed bank to preserve plant species and their genetic diversity, which currently holds around five million seeds. He noted that duplicates of these seeds are also kept in the UK as reserves.

The Ruler of Sharjah approved relocating the seed bank to become part of the University of Al Dhaid’s facilities, aiming to boost scientific research, enhance laboratory capacities, and improve agriculture students’ practical training.

The Board of Trustees meeting also approved establishing two new colleges: the College of Computing and Intelligent Systems and the College of Environmental Sciences. This expansion responds to growing demand for modern specializations aligned with labor market needs, sustainable development, and AI initiatives.

Additionally, the board endorsed launching a dual degree program in Sustainable Agriculture in partnership with the Royal Agricultural College in the UK to prepare qualified professionals in food security and modern farming.

The board reviewed and approved reports from the financial, academic, internal audit, compliance, and resource development committees, covering their recent activities and monitoring educational, research, and administrative progress.

Various administrative and academic topics concerning the university were discussed, along with periodic performance reports.

Dr. Aisha Abu Shlaibi, Chancellor of the University of Al Dhaid, presented an executive summary of the academic year 2024-2025’s activities, achievements, and updates on ongoing projects, highlighting key outcomes that align with the university’s vision.

During the meeting, H.H. Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed visited the student lounges for male and female students, meeting a group of female students. He reviewed the lounges’ features, designed to foster a productive study environment, each accommodating 100 students and equipped with cafés serving snacks and beverages.

The President also examined ongoing expansion plans for university projects, including veterinary labs, sports fields, gyms, an experimental farm, and shelters supporting agricultural and animal science students, along with other student service facilities.

He visited the Sharjah Products Exhibition held at the university, showcasing items from Jabal Al-Deem such as Taif and Muhammadi roses, honey, olives and their derivatives, apples, thyme, and rosemary. His Highness also viewed the latest Sharjah Agriculture and Livestock Production EST (Ektifa) products, including GHERAS vegetables, fruits, jams, natural cooking sauces, FILI poultry, Saba Sanabel baked goods like Arabic bread and pasta, as well as Mleiha milk and laban.

Following the meeting, H.H. Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed hosted a lunch for the Board members featuring delicacies from Sharjah, including veal from Mleiha cattle farm, cheeses from goat farms, poultry from Fili farm, fruits and vegetables from Al Dhaid greenhouses, and bread and wheat porridge made from local wheat.
