emirates7 - The UAE Alliance for Climate Action (UACA), the country’s leading non-state actor initiative spearheaded by Emirates Nature–WWF and supported by the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment (MOCCAE), recently held its Third Advisory Committee meeting. The gathering brought together senior leaders to assess progress and plan the programme’s initiatives for 2025.
The meeting also marked the official inclusion of the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure (MoEI) into the Committee.
Led by Razan Khalifa Al Mubarak, President of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and Managing Director of the Mohamed bin Zayed Species Conservation Fund, the meeting emphasized the critical role of collaborative efforts in tackling climate change.
“UACA engages non-state actors and promotes cross-sector dialogue to uncover shared opportunities and key drivers that accelerate climate action,” Al Mubarak stated. “Non-state actors, especially private sector companies, are vital partners in reaching the UAE’s national and emirate-level climate targets. We invite more organisations to join the Alliance and work together on innovative solutions to significantly reduce emissions nationwide.”
The Advisory Committee includes senior representatives from government, finance, industry, academia, and environmental sectors. Members include Laila Mostafa Abdullatif, Director-General of Emirates Nature–WWF; Dr. Alanoud Alhaj Al Ali, Acting Assistant Undersecretary for Green Development and Climate Change at MOCCAE; Mohamed Al Marzooqi, CEO of HSBC UAE; Sheikha Al-Mazrouei, Executive Director for Integrated Environment Policy and Planning at the Environment Agency–Abu Dhabi (EAD); Eng. Sharif Al Olama, Undersecretary for Energy and Petroleum Affairs at MoEI and newest Committee member; Dr. Steven Griffiths, Vice Chancellor for Research at the American University of Sharjah; Dr. Leila Hoteit, Senior Partner and Managing Director at Boston Consulting Group; and Dr. Nasser Saidi, Chairman of the Clean Energy Business Council.
A major focus of the meeting was an on the Road2.0 initiative, designed to accelerate the decarbonisation of commercial transport in the UAE. This initiative has already achieved a key milestone: the Electric Vehicle (EV) Demand Declaration, signed by 17 entities in the UAE’s EV ecosystem, commits to scaling up commercial EV adoption and deploying 20,000 Zero Emission Vehicles (ZEVs) by 2040.
Eng. Sharif Al Olama said, “To support the UAE’s ambitious goals for green mobility, the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure is advancing sustainable transport through policy development and boosting EV infrastructure via the UAEV project — a nationwide EV charging network.”
He added, “Initiatives like Road2.0, combined with strong cooperation between government and private sector, are establishing a solid foundation for a thriving domestic EV ecosystem. The Ministry is proud to back this effort and collaborate with UACA to deliver impactful results aligned with the UAE’s sustainability ambitions.”
The CEO of HSBC UAE emphasized, “Collaboration among leaders, organisations, and experts across sectors is essential to meeting the UAE’s net zero goal. As a founding donor of UACA, we value the Alliance’s role in uniting stakeholders to exchange knowledge, tackle challenges, and develop locally relevant solutions that reduce emissions and foster economic growth.”
Laila Abdullatif highlighted, “UACA offers a credible, inclusive platform for non-state actors to take meaningful action that boosts climate ambition and progress. Now in its third year, UACA brings together 55 non-state actors committed to setting and achieving science-based targets aligned with the Paris Agreement. Through its two strategic pillars — preparing organisations for decarbonisation and advocating for supportive policies — UACA remains a key platform driving climate action.”
UACA continues to encourage non-state actors to join the alliance and increase their decarbonisation efforts in the UAE.
