Chinese researchers reveal link between physical activity, longevity, ageing

emirates7 - Chinese researchers have recently explored the relationship between physical activity, sedentary behavior, and their effects on longevity and biological ageing, reinforcing the guidance to "move more and sit less" for healthier aging.

The study, conducted by Sun Yat-sen University, analyzed data from 20,924 Chinese individuals aged 50 and above, gathered through questionnaires as part of the Guangzhou Biobank Cohort Study.

The findings revealed that engaging in moderate physical activity, as opposed to low levels, significantly boosts the likelihood of living longer, increasing it by 56%. Additionally, the frequency, duration, and intensity of moderate physical activity were all positively linked to greater longevity. However, vigorous physical activity did not provide the same benefits and sometimes even showed a negative association.

Regarding accelerated aging, the researchers observed that higher frequencies of moderate physical activity were tied to a reduced risk of ageing by more than five years. Conversely, spending more time on vigorous physical activity correlated with an elevated risk of accelerated aging by over five years.

Overall, physical activity demonstrated protective benefits against both age acceleration and shortened lifespan, with part of the effect mediated through lipid regulation. In contrast, prolonged sedentary behavior was found to have detrimental effects on biological aging.
