China develops satellite to track coal emissions

emirates7 - A Chinese research team has unveiled an advanced remote sensing satellite model designed to accurately and continuously monitor carbon dioxide emissions from large coal-fired power plants, offering an innovative approach to tracking global carbon output.

As reported by China’s Xinhua News Agency, coal-fired power stations contribute around 50 percent of global carbon emissions from fossil fuel use, making them a key factor in assessing human-induced emissions.

Scientists from the Aerospace Information Research Institute at the Chinese Academy of Sciences refined detection algorithms and created the new satellite system, which has successfully identified CO₂ emissions from 14 major coal-fired plants worldwide using satellite-based data.
