MoHESR establishes Advisory Committee for Higher Education & Future Skills

emirates7 - The Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research (MoHESR) has established the Advisory Committee for Higher Education and Future Skills, led by Dr. Abdulrahman Al Awar, who serves as both Minister of Human Resources and Emiratisation and Acting Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research.

This new committee is a subcommittee under the Higher Education Committee of the Education, Human Development and Community Council, reflecting MoHESR’s continued efforts to enhance institutional cooperation and advance the UAE’s higher education sector.

The committee aims to help build a flexible, future-ready education system that aligns with national development goals and adapts to the fast-changing global labor market.

Dr. Al Awar emphasized, “At MoHESR, we recognize that a successful, sustainable higher education system depends on strong collaboration with national businesses, the private sector, and research institutions. Creating this committee demonstrates our commitment to a participatory and integrated approach to shaping higher education’s future—improving graduate qualifications, strengthening capabilities, and preparing them to contribute to a competitive, knowledge-driven economy. This work supports our vision for a dynamic education system that equips students with the skills needed to lead the nation’s sustainable development journey.”

He added, “We are working closely with public and private partners to redesign higher education to be more agile, flexible, and closely connected to the evolving needs of the economy, technology, and society. This ensures our graduates earn high-quality qualifications and advanced skills aligned with their ambitions and national progress.”

The committee includes distinguished academic leaders from UAE higher education institutions (HEIs) and representatives from key economic sectors such as technology, industry, energy, health, tourism, and investment, illustrating the alignment of higher education with national priorities.

At its inaugural meeting at the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation, the committee reviewed the current status of higher education in the UAE and its role in developing the sector, linking it to secondary education and the labor market.

Discussions covered boosting global competitiveness through partnerships with international, industrial, and research bodies, evaluated the performance of UAE HEIs in global rankings, and explored strategies for improvement.

Members reviewed collaboration criteria between HEIs and industry within the established framework, launched a pilot initiative to integrate artificial intelligence (AI) in higher education, and formed specialized working groups to oversee the implementation of the committee’s plans and recommendations.

The committee’s responsibilities include proposing development plans for higher education aligned with general education plans, evaluating HEI performance, and recommending improvements based on international standards and national needs.

It will also foster collaboration between HEIs and strengthen public and private sector partnerships to ensure higher education outcomes meet labor market demands.

Additional duties involve enhancing coordination among HEIs, research councils, and key economic sectors, organizing conferences and scientific events, and establishing technical teams to execute joint initiatives and projects across various fields.

The committee’s formation is part of MoHESR’s broader strategy to elevate the UAE’s higher education and scientific research sectors globally and align them with the country’s strategic goals, especially building a knowledge-based economy and developing national human capital.
