emirates7 - The Sharjah Archaeology Authority (SAA) has announced that Dibba Al Hisn Fort and Settlement, Fili Fort, and Wadi Shees have been added to the Islamic World Heritage List by ICESCO, underscoring their cultural and historical importance.

The nomination files were submitted by the SAA in collaboration with the Authority for Initiatives Implementation and Infrastructure Development (Mubadara) during the 12th meeting of ICESCO’s Heritage Committee held in Shusha, Azerbaijan, the designated Islamic World Cultural Capital for 2024.

This recognition highlights the significance of these sites in enhancing Islamic and human cultural identity, as well as their role in safeguarding history and heritage for future generations.

The ICESCO Heritage Committee announced the registration of 91 historical sites and cultural elements on its heritage list, among which are the three notable locations from the Emirate of Sharjah.

Dibba Al Hisn Fort is notable for its contribution to trade and cultural exchange over five centuries, housing artifacts from China, India, and Europe, which reflect its vital role in regional commerce.

Fili Fort, strategically positioned, was instrumental in safeguarding water resources and trade routes between Al Dhaid and Oman, supported by the traditional aflaj irrigation system.

Wadi Shees, celebrated for its natural beauty, is an environmentally significant region featuring ancient irrigation systems and rare wildlife species, making it a site of scientific interest.

Eisa Yousif, Director-General of the SAA, expressed gratitude to H.H. Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, for his continued support in the preservation of Sharjah’s heritage. He emphasized that these sites exemplify Sharjah’s unwavering commitment to protecting its cultural identity and contributing to the preservation of global heritage.
