Sharjah honours four prominent figures of Mauritanian literature

emirates7 - Under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, the Mauritanian capital Nouakchott hosted a formal cultural celebration that reinforced loyalty to creative talents and affirmed their esteemed status.

This event was part of the 23rd Sharjah Cultural Honouring Forum, organized by the Sharjah Department of Culture in collaboration with the Mauritanian Ministry of Culture, Arts, Communication and Relations with Parliament.

During the forum, four distinguished figures from Mauritanian literature were honored for their significant contributions to enriching cultural life: poet Mohamed Fall Abdel Latif, linguistics scholar Dr. Yahya Al Hashemi, language researcher Dr. Mohamedou Ameen, and poet Mohamed Al Hafiz Ould Ahmedou.

The forum aligns with the directives of the Ruler of Sharjah to recognize literary figures who have contributed to contemporary Arab culture. This marks the fourth time the forum has been held in Mauritania, where 12 Mauritanian creatives have been celebrated in previous editions.

The awards ceremony took place in Nouakchott’s Conference Hall, attended by Abdullah bin Mohammed Al Owais, Chairman of the Sharjah Department of Culture; El Houssein Ould Meddou, Mauritania’s Minister of Culture, Arts, Communication and Relations with Parliament; Mohammed Ibrahim Al Qaseer, Director of Cultural Affairs at Sharjah’s department; the Governor of Nouakchott-West representing the Mayor of Tevragh-Zeina Municipality; along with many Mauritanian intellectuals, academics, writers, and families of the honorees.

In his speech, Abdullah Al Owais emphasized the importance of the ongoing cultural partnership between Sharjah and Mauritania, stating, “We are pleased to gather today at this distinguished cultural event, which continues the fruitful cooperation between the Sharjah Department of Culture and the Ministry of Culture, Arts, Communication and Relations with Parliament. This collaboration has fostered many cultural initiatives that support Arab culture and strengthen the role of thought and creativity in our Arab societies.”

I extend my deepest thanks and appreciation to His Highness Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, a visionary leader devoted to promoting the Arabic language and literature, and supporting culture and intellectuals across the Arab world.”

The honorees expressed heartfelt thanks for the recognition, viewing it as a source of pride and an acknowledgment of their cultural and creative journeys. They noted that the Sharjah Cultural Honouring Forum sets a civilized example for celebrating Arab intellectuals and highlights the Emirate’s firm commitment to nurturing thought and creativity throughout the Arab region.
