emirates7 - On the eve of the International Day of Sign Languages, celebrated globally on September 23, Dubai Police held a sign language workshop for students from private schools.
The UAE has introduced several initiatives to support people of determination, including free parking, Salik toll fee exemptions, modified taxis, and various discounts on hospital bills and phone plans. Both citizens and residents of the UAE can obtain the Fazaa card, while those in Dubai can also access the Sanad card. These cards offer a range of benefits and discounts.
Dubai Police’s initiative promotes inclusivity and seeks to raise awareness among the youth about sign language. Titled "Let Our Hands Speak," the workshop was attended by 105 students from Al Mawakeb School – Al Barsha. It was organised by the People of Determination Empowerment Council and the Positive Spirit Council.
The workshop was led by Mohammad Mussad Al Hajajji, a certified sign language trainer, who stressed the importance of sign language education in overcoming communication barriers with the deaf community. He highlighted how this initiative contributes to the community’s happiness and social inclusion.
"This initiative aims to integrate the deaf community into society, in line with Dubai Police’s strategic goals of creating a happy community and a safe city. It also supports Dubai’s ‘My Community…A Place for Everyone’ initiative, which aims to make the emirate fully inclusive for people of determination," he explained.
Fatima Bouhajeer, Chairperson of the Positive Spirit Council and member of the People of Determination Empowerment Council, emphasized that the council's participation aims to educate young people on important community values, including coexistence, tolerance, dialogue, and respect for others. She added that the council offers workshops and lectures to enhance students' knowledge of communicating with people of determination, particularly the deaf, using sign language, while also organizing activities that promote integration and coexistence.
