emirates7 - The Sharjah Department of Culture is preparing to host the 11th edition of the Sharjah Calligraphy Biennial on 2nd October, under the patronage of H.H. Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah.
The event will pay tribute to three notable figures in Arabic calligraphy: Emirati calligrapher Khalid Ali Al Jalaf, Iraqi researcher Idham Khalid Hanish, and Spanish historian of Islamic and Andalusian art José Miguel Poyatos. Their work will be featured in solo exhibitions at Calligraphy Square in Sharjah, which will open on the first day and remain accessible to the public throughout the biennial.
Mohammed Ibrahim Al Qaseer, Director of the Cultural Affairs Department and Director of the Sharjah Calligraphy Biennial, highlighted the importance of recognizing innovators in the art of calligraphy, describing it as a universal form of expression that blends deep meaning and eloquence. He noted that this aligns with the directives of the Ruler of Sharjah and supports the biennial’s mission to honor the creators of this traditional art.
This edition will present a variety of group and solo exhibitions, curated by experts in the field. The general exhibition will feature original calligraphy from artists around the world, while others will showcase contemporary pieces and works by Emirati calligraphers celebrating their homeland.
In addition, an exhibition dedicated to reviving forgotten scripts will be included. Solo exhibitions by Turkish artist Davut Bektas and Iranian artist Sadegh Shafiee, titled "Golden Letters" and "Notations on the Pen" respectively, will also be presented. Several local institutions will participate in the biennial as well.
