emirates7 - A volcano erupted in southwestern Iceland on Wednesday, according to the country’s meteorological office. This marks the latest in a series of eruptions that have occurred near the capital in recent years.
Nicknamed the land of ice and fire, Iceland — known for its glaciers and volcanoes — has experienced around twelve eruptions since volcanic systems on the Reykjanes Peninsula became active again in 2021.
These eruptions, called fissure eruptions, involve lava flowing from extended cracks in the earth’s surface rather than erupting from a single central volcano.
So far, the Reykjanes eruptions have not threatened Reykjavik, the capital, nor have they released large amounts of ash into the upper atmosphere, meaning air travel has not been affected.
