China to host 200 digital economy, AI training programmes for Global South

emirates7 - China is set to launch the "Digital South" initiative as part of its Global Development Initiative (GDI), with plans to offer 200 training programmes in artificial intelligence (AI) and the digital economy to countries in the Global South over the next five years, Premier Li Qiang announced at the 17th BRICS Summit.

During the summit’s plenary sessions held Sunday and Monday in Rio de Janeiro, Premier Li addressed a range of global issues, including the advancement of multilateralism, AI, climate change, environmental challenges, and global health, according to Xinhua News Agency.

The sessions were attended by leaders from BRICS nations, partner and guest countries, and international organisations.

Li warned that the current global economic and trade systems are under significant pressure, making the path to recovery difficult. He called for enhanced BRICS cooperation to remain true to its original mission, adapt to evolving global needs, promote multilateralism, and support the creation of a more equitable and open international economic order. He also urged for stronger solidarity among Global South nations to bolster global development and stability.

Premier Li stressed the importance of tapping into new avenues for economic growth, particularly through partnerships in emerging sectors like the digital and green economies. He underscored the transformative potential of AI in modernising industries and improving everyday life, especially for developing nations.

Reaffirming China’s support, he announced the rollout of 200 training sessions focused on AI and the digital economy for Global South countries. He also extended an open invitation to the international community to take part in the upcoming World Artificial Intelligence Conference, set to be held in China this July.
