Public bus coverage now reaches 88% of Dubai’s urban areas: RTA

emirates7 - Mattar Al Tayer, Director-General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), highlighted that the integration of smart technologies and artificial intelligence into the public bus system has significantly boosted the performance and efficiency of Dubai’s mass transit network. This technological advancement has led to enhanced operations, cost savings, improved punctuality, and higher customer satisfaction.

Currently, public buses serve around 88% of Dubai, with a fleet of 1,390 buses operating 11,000 daily trips, covering approximately 333,000 kilometres.

Al Tayer emphasized RTA’s ongoing efforts to upgrade the bus service to encourage wider public transport usage. A key goal is to strengthen connectivity between residential, commercial, and industrial zones by integrating the bus system with the Dubai Metro. Buses play a critical role in linking other transport options, including the metro, tram, and taxis. In 2025, RTA plans to expand the network of dedicated bus and taxi lanes by adding six new segments spanning 13 kilometres, bringing the total length to 20 kilometres. This expansion is projected to result in a 10% rise in ridership, a 42% improvement in punctuality, a 41% reduction in travel time, and a positive impact on traffic flow.

According to Al Tayer, public bus ridership reached 188 million in 2024—an 8% increase over 2023. The bus fleet serves 187 routes: 110 routes in urban and rural areas, 64 connecting to metro stations, 13 intercity lines, and seasonal routes to destinations such as Global Village. On average, buses carry over 500,000 passengers daily, maintaining an on-time performance rate above 77%. RTA also continuously evaluates and adjusts routes based on usage data and rider feedback. Last year, the authority introduced nine express lines, nine new metro link routes, and four taxi routes in high-demand zones. Additionally, the implementation of a bus priority system at traffic signals has improved arrival times by up to 12%.

In recent years, RTA has introduced a new generation of bus stations that blend modern engineering with high-quality service systems. These facilities are designed for seamless transport integration, enhancing access throughout the city. They aim to offer safe, convenient access for pedestrians and cyclists, and include features that cater to People of Determination.

These stations also improve links between transit hubs, development zones, and nearby communities. The approach addresses first- and last-mile connectivity by incorporating essential infrastructure such as bus stops, bike lanes, pedestrian crossings, landscaping, and bicycle parking, all aimed at encouraging walking and the use of personal mobility devices.

Dubai’s modern bus fleet meets Euro 6 low-emission standards, offering spacious seating, advanced safety systems, and easy boarding features. Buses are designed for comfort and accessibility, with dedicated areas for People of Determination, reflecting RTA’s commitment to service quality and inclusivity.

The emirate’s public transport system is defined by its strong multimodal integration, forming the backbone of daily commuting. This interconnected network has transformed travel habits across the city, making public transport a preferred choice for many residents. RTA’s strategic focus is on seamless integration across all mobility platforms, including the metro, tram, buses, marine transport, shared mobility services, and first- and last-mile options.

The authority’s broader plans also involve expanding the road infrastructure and enhancing pedestrian and cycling facilities, along with smart traffic and transport management systems. These efforts aim to optimize the efficiency of all mobility networks. In line with these goals, RTA has implemented policies to reduce private vehicle usage and promote public and shared transportation as more sustainable and convenient alternatives.
