Tabreed completes 'Verified Carbon Standard’ programme

emirates7 - Tabreed, a leading district cooling company, has made significant progress in its efforts to decarbonize the cooling sector by achieving the ‘Verified Carbon Standard’ at one of its Abu Dhabi plants, which certifies carbon credits to offset emissions.

Verra, an independent non-profit organization that sets global standards for climate action and sustainable development, conducted a year-long verification process at the plant. This facility provides sustainable cooling services to a prominent commercial and tourist development, essential for its daily operations.

The study found that the plant’s operations offer substantial environmental benefits by maximizing energy efficiency. The 28,000 Refrigeration Ton (RT) facility is estimated to prevent approximately 19,320 tonnes of carbon emissions annually by reducing electricity consumption, compared to other stand-alone cooling systems. Verra’s report highlights that Tabreed’s “highly efficient district cooling will displace the cooling from conventional/less efficient cooling systems and reduce electricity consumption, resulting in a reduction in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.”

The findings from the report make Tabreed eligible to trade carbon credits in the voluntary market as an emissions preventer, marking a significant milestone for both the company and the district cooling sector as a whole. This achievement is unprecedented in the industry, opening new revenue opportunities for Tabreed through carbon credit trading, as companies globally seek ways to offset their emissions.

Although this project focused on a single plant, its success paves the way for Tabreed to apply the same methodology across other facilities in its portfolio under a framework that has independently proven district cooling technology to be more energy-efficient and less electricity-intensive, thereby leading to significantly lower carbon emissions.

This development follows several renewable energy initiatives by Tabreed in 2023, including, in collaboration with ADNOC, the design, construction, and commissioning of the region’s first district cooling plant powered by renewable geothermal energy.

Khalid Al Marzooqi, Tabreed’s Chief Executive Officer, emphasized the company’s pioneering role in the district cooling industry, stating, “Where we lead, others try to follow, and this will be no different.” He noted that Tabreed is the first district energy company globally to achieve this recognition, underscoring the efficiency of district cooling, which can be up to 50 percent more energy-efficient than conventional methods.

Al Marzooqi also highlighted the growing global awareness of climate change and the increasing demand for cooling, which is becoming essential for communities, businesses, and industries. He affirmed that Tabreed is well-positioned to meet this demand, with operations in six countries and the capacity to expand into new markets, helping countries achieve their net-zero goals while supporting societal and economic progress.
