emirates7 - President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan on Tuesday attended the opening session of the COP29 World Leaders Climate Action Summit, reaffirming the UAE’s commitment to accelerating climate action and building a climate-resilient economy for the future.
The summit, inaugurated by His Excellency Ilham Aliyev, President of Azerbaijan, is being held in Baku from November 11 to 22 under the theme ‘In Solidarity for a Green World.’
In his address, His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed emphasized the UAE's longstanding commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainable development. He reflected on the UAE's role in hosting COP28 the previous year, where the country led efforts to foster international collaboration and assess progress on the Paris Agreement's goals.
He also highlighted the importance of ongoing global cooperation on climate action, viewing it as an opportunity for progress rather than a challenge. His Highness pointed to the UAE Consensus from COP28, which established a clear path to a fair and responsible energy transition while reaffirming global commitments to meet financial pledges and provide climate funding for vulnerable nations.
His Highness called for unity over division, stressing the need for collective efforts for the benefit of humanity. Upon arriving at the COP29 venue, he was greeted by President Ilham Aliyev and UN Secretary-General António Guterres. His Highness also engaged with several other delegation heads, discussing UAE relations and the crucial role of COP29 in advancing global climate action. The UAE delegation joined His Highness in the opening session of the summit.
