emirates7 - The UAE, represented by a delegation from the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MoHRE), participated in the first preparatory meeting for the Global Forum on Migration and Development (GFMD) 2024-2025, held recently in Geneva. This meeting, chaired by Colombia in collaboration with France, marked an important step in preparing for the upcoming GFMD Summit.
Ambassador Jamal Al Musharakh, UAE’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations and other international organizations in Geneva, led the UAE delegation. In his address, he reaffirmed the UAE’s commitment to supporting the Forum’s initiatives and highlighted the importance of shared responsibility in tackling migration challenges.
He expressed the UAE’s full support for Colombia’s chairmanship for the 2024-2025 term, emphasizing the Forum’s dedication to strengthening international migration governance, fostering productive dialogue on migration and development, and promoting inclusive approaches to enhance global community wellbeing.
The preparatory meeting focused on discussing the challenges and opportunities related to regular migration and temporary labor mobility as key components of development and community welfare. It also addressed topics such as the role of women in global migration, the influence of media and culture on the migration narrative, and the importance of regional cooperation to ensure safe and orderly migration for development. Enhancing migration management, pathways, and policies was also discussed.
This meeting is the first of three preparatory sessions leading up to the 15th GFMD Summit, where key documents and working papers will be developed. The UAE has been actively involved in the Forum since 2008, having chaired it in 2020, and continues to champion labor mobility cooperation.
The UAE’s participation aligns with the Abu Dhabi Dialogue, a regional platform promoting communication and cooperation between labor-sending and receiving countries in Asia. This initiative focuses on best practices for regulating labor markets and improving the wellbeing of workers while maximizing the benefits of labor mobility for the economies of the region’s member states.
