emirates7 - The Board of Management of the Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation (FANR) recently held a meeting where Director-General Christer Viktorsson provided an on the regulator’s oversight activities and its progress in implementing the Zero Government Bureaucracy Programme, which was launched by the Federal Government in November 2023.
Viktorsson also announced the appointment of FANR’s Chief Artificial Intelligence Officer, who will be tasked with developing an AI strategy for the nuclear sector, in line with FANR’s mission to safeguard public health, workers, and the environment.
The board members extended their congratulations to the UAE leadership and citizens for the successful commercial operation of Unit 4 at the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant, marking a significant achievement as the UAE became the first nation in the region to operate a nuclear power plant, now supplying 25% of the country's electricity needs. The Board also received an on FANR’s regulatory oversight concerning the scheduled outage and refueling of the plant’s four units, reaffirming the regulator’s dedication to ensuring the plant’s safe and secure operation.
Additionally, the Board approved several collaborative agreements focused on nuclear safety, security, radiation safety, and capacity building. These include research projects under the Nuclear Energy Agency (NEA) to enhance technical expertise in areas like advanced control room operations, severe accident management, and cybersecurity.
