emirates7 - The Tawazun Council for Defence Enablement and the Advanced Technology Research Council (ATRC) have signed a strategic partnership agreement to boost research, development, and innovation in the UAE’s defence and security sectors.
This collaboration aims to accelerate the adoption of advanced technologies—such as artificial intelligence, autonomous systems, secure communications, and advanced materials—by creating joint programs and initiatives. The goal is to translate scientific research into practical applications that address national security priorities and support the development of a knowledge-based innovation ecosystem.
The agreement highlights both entities’ shared dedication to enhancing defence sector readiness by harnessing local expertise and aligning resources toward initiatives that promote national content and data-driven decision-making.
The signing ceremony was attended by Dr. Nasser Humaid Al Nuaimi, Secretary-General of the Tawazun Council. The agreement was formalized by Shahab Issa Abu Shahab, Director-General of ATRC, and Shareef Hashim Al Hashmi, CEO of Operations at Tawazun.
Abu Shahab emphasized that advanced technologies are rapidly transforming various industries, including both defence and civilian sectors. He noted that this demands a rethinking of R&D strategies to keep pace with evolving needs. “Through our partnership with Tawazun, we aim to foster greater integration, particularly in critical sectors like transport, energy, and telecommunications,” he said. He also stressed that the exchange of knowledge and expertise between sectors is essential for developing future-ready solutions.
This partnership reflects the UAE’s forward-thinking approach to embedding cutting-edge technologies across strategic domains. With ATRC’s strong R&D capabilities and growing pool of homegrown talent, national entities like Tawazun are advancing innovation to strengthen the country’s security infrastructure and support the shift to a diversified, knowledge-based economy.
Al Hashmi added that a robust R&D ecosystem in the defence sector requires close cooperation between national institutions and alignment of strategic capabilities. He described the agreement as a major step in linking ATRC’s advanced research capabilities with Tawazun’s national objectives, in response to the UAE’s evolving defence and security requirements.
“This collaboration is designed to accelerate technological progress in the defence field by focusing on key priority areas, empowering Emirati talent, and fostering cooperation among government bodies, research institutes, and industry players,” he said. “The aim is to ensure a meaningful and lasting contribution to the UAE’s defence ecosystem.”
