emirates7 - Sharjah's Roads and Transport Authority (SRTA) has launched the first phase of electric bus operations, with 10 buses running across 3 intercity routes. This initiative is part of the emirate’s commitment to supporting the Climate Neutrality 2050 goal and promoting environmentally sustainable public transportation.
Sharjah's move follows Abu Dhabi’s introduction of 'green' buses, including electric and hydrogen-powered vehicles, on September 12. Anan Alamri, section head at ITC’s Alternative Sustainable Mobility, Public Transport Affairs Sector, discussed this initiative at the 'Journey to Net Zero Forum' hosted by Khaleej Times on August 27.
The hydrogen-powered buses operate on Route 65, connecting Marina Mall to Shams Boutik on Al Reem Island. Unlike traditional buses, these vehicles produce no harmful emissions, with hydrogen-powered buses emitting only water vapour.
The shift from diesel to renewable energy in Abu Dhabi is expected to reduce annual carbon dioxide emissions by more than 100,000 metric tonnes, as reported by WAM.
