Sharjah Ruler inaugurates exhibitions of Khalili, Karaka

emirates7 - H.H. Dr. Sheikh Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, officially opened two art exhibitions on Saturday at Al Mureijah Art Spaces: “Between Circles and Constellations” by artist Bouchra Khalili and “Ka Awatea: A New Dawn” by artist Emily Karaka. These exhibitions, part of the Sharjah Art Foundation’s Autumn 2024 programme, showcase a variety of works by the international artists, featuring storytelling, visual and audio performances, written texts, and theoretical innovations. The exhibitions highlight societal issues through a broad artistic lens, supporting the foundation’s goal of fostering artistic dialogue with global cultural identities.

Sheikh Sultan toured Bouchra Khalili's exhibition, curated by Sheikha Hoor bint Sultan Al Qasimi, President of the Sharjah Art Foundation, with the assistance of Amal Al Ali and Mira Madhu. The artist provided an in-depth explanation of her work, emphasizing the diverse visual and audio materials integrated into her projects, which explore ancient historical experiences and promote solidarity across societies, countering harmful divisions. Khalili's exhibition, recognized globally, showcases her extensive research and investigation of absent histories, combining fiction and documentary elements to new forms of belonging. Her work often focuses on immigrant issues and the erasure of their identities, exemplified by her concept of "radical citizenship," which transcends traditional notions of identity and community.

The Ruler of Sharjah also visited the exhibition of Maori artist Emily Karaka, which reflects the unique cultural and societal issues of her origins, including the "Iwi" tribes of New Zealand. Curated by Sheikha Hoor bint Sultan Al Qasimi and Megan Tamati-Quennell, with assistance from Amal Al Khaja and Abdullah Al Janahi, Karaka’s exhibition addresses political and colonial issues through vibrant colors, expressive intensity, and multilingual writings. Her works balance artistic precision with strong messages on social justice, environmental concerns, and pride in her roots and family.

The event was attended by Sheikha Hoor bint Sultan Al Qasimi, Sheikha Nawar bint Ahmed Al Qasimi, Mohammed Obaid Al Zaabi, as well as numerous artists, intellectuals, officials, and media representatives.
