Al Ain Zoo welcomes three Arabian sand cats

emirates7 - Al Ain Zoo has made headlines with the birth of three Arabian sand cats, marking the first time in several years that the species has been successfully bred at the facility.

Classified as endangered on the Red List of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, these young sand cats are a testament to the zoo's ongoing conservation efforts. The zoo’s animal care and veterinary teams have carefully matched Arabian sand cats by their genetic backgrounds and age groups at the Arabian Sand Cat Breeding Centre, a facility specifically designed for the care and breeding of this rare species, adhering to international standards.

The newborn sand cats are healthy and flourishing in a globally standardized environment. They receive comprehensive care from the zoo’s team, which ensures best practices in veterinary, nutritional, and behavioral care, contributing to Al Ain Zoo’s ability to provide unique and enjoyable experiences for visitors.

Engineer Ahmed Eisa Al Harasi, Acting Director General of the Zoo & Aquarium Public Institution in Al Ain, expressed his satisfaction with the successful birth of the three cats, stating, “We are delighted with the arrival of these three sand cats and proud of our breeding programme’s success. We remain committed to implementing specialized programmes and conducting field research to study and breed these species in their natural habitats.”
