China outlines digital transformation vision at global conference

emirates7 - China has announced plans to intensify its push for technological innovation, share its homegrown technologies and applications, and drive the digital transformation of cities—all as part of broader efforts to develop new quality productive forces.

According to China Daily, Zhuang Rongwen, head of the Cyberspace Administration of China, emphasized the importance of integrating scientific and technological advances with industrial development. He stressed the need to adapt these efforts to regional characteristics and harness emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence, to modernize urban management.

Zhuang made these remarks at the opening of the Global Digital Economy Conference 2025, which began on Wednesday in Beijing. The event, held under the theme “Building a Digital-Friendly City,” brought together over 300 international delegates from more than 50 countries and major global organizations.

Meanwhile, Liu Liehong, director of the National Data Administration (NDA), highlighted the pivotal role of digital technologies and data in urban safety and emergency response. He called for deeper reforms in data sharing and circulation, as well as the need to promote market-driven allocation of data resources to fuel digital economic innovation.

As outlined in the NDA’s Digital China Development Report 2024, the core sectors of China’s digital economy contributed about 10% to the nation’s GDP last year. The country’s data output hit 41.06 zettabytes in 2024—marking a 25% year-on-year growth.

To guide the process, China has issued a national directive aimed at advancing smart city development and urban digital upgrades. The goal is to significantly enhance urban governance and, by 2027, achieve major progress in digital urban transformation, establishing multiple smart, livable, and resilient cities across the country.
