emirates7 - The second AI Capacity-Building Workshop, hosted by China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, commenced in Beijing on Monday. This initiative is designed to share China's experience in artificial intelligence development and promote its Global AI Governance Initiative.
According to China Central Television (CCTV), the event drew participation from officials representing China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Beijing Municipal People’s Government, as well as delegates from international organisations and nearly 40 developing nations.
During the opening ceremony, Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Ma Zhaoxu highlighted the transformative impact of emerging technologies like AI on global industries. He stated that China has consistently championed intelligent transformation and believes that AI should serve as a global public good, urging all nations to uphold the idea of a shared future for humanity.
In October 2023, China introduced the Global AI Governance Initiative to support the responsible global adoption of AI. This effort was further advanced in July 2024, when China facilitated the unanimous approval of a UN resolution aimed at strengthening international collaboration in AI capacity-building during the 78th UN General Assembly.
Chola Milambo, Zambia’s permanent representative to the UN, acknowledged China's role in building international consensus around AI governance and development, which he said has proven beneficial for developing countries.
“AI offers significant opportunities to address major global challenges, including climate change and public health. In Zambia, we’ve developed both a digitalisation framework and an AI strategy, but the next step is turning these strategies into practical initiatives,” Milambo said.
China has also actively collaborated with BRICS nations, ASEAN countries, and others in advancing AI industry applications and infrastructure. These efforts aim to enhance the technological capabilities of Global South nations and reduce disparities in global AI development.
