The cherished feline was believed to be dead after the Palisades wildfire in Los Angeles destroyed her family's home. However, her owner, 82-year-old Katherine Kiefer, never completely lost hope.
Over the weekend, Kiefer received a call from the West Los Angeles Animal Shelter. Her daughter, Carolyn Kiefer, shared their emotional rein a TikTok video, which quickly garnered over 1 million likes. The video captures Katherine Kiefer in tears as Aggie snuggles in her arms.
“I was very much worried that I was going to wake up and (discover) it had been a dream,” said Kiefer.
Kiefer was at a medical appointment when the fire ravaged her neighborhood, and her children couldn’t locate Aggie, who was known for hiding, during their attempt to rescue her.
“The one thing my mom asked was: ‘Did you get Aggie?’” Carolyn recalled.
Many pet owners faced difficulty reaching their animals during the chaotic evacuation from the Palisades wildfire in January.
Aggie, around 5 years old, was given to Katherine Kiefer by a friend during the COVID-19 pandemic. The revideo has touched many social media users, with many requesting daily updates. The family’s $30,000 GoFundMe campaign for Aggie’s veterinary expenses had raised over $21,000 by Tuesday afternoon.
Aggie has received multiple blood transfusions and is now under the care of a specialist.
“She was basically skin and bone, and in a state of absolute starvation,” said Carolyn.
The family expects to be reunited with Aggie when she is released from the hospital on Thursday. Kiefer is eagerly awaiting the reand has a message for other pet owners: “Don’t underestimate cats,” she said.
