EGA, ENEC deliver first aluminium produced with carbon-free nuclear energy

emirates7 - Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA) and Emirates Nuclear Energy Company (ENEC) have announced the UAE’s inaugural delivery of low-carbon aluminium produced using electricity from the Barakah Nuclear Energy Plant.

EGA markets this environmentally friendly aluminium under the brand name MinimAL. This metal will be supplied to CANEX Aluminum, a leading aluminium downstream producer in Egypt.

This new product reinforces the UAE’s position as a dependable supplier of low-carbon industrial materials to international markets and broadens EGA’s range of low-carbon metals for customers locally and globally.

Mohamed Al Hammadi, ENEC’s Managing Director and CEO, highlighted that this achievement demonstrates how nuclear energy enhances national energy security while simultaneously supporting the UAE’s industrial decarbonization by providing clean, reliable electricity around the clock to energy-intensive industries like aluminium production. He emphasized that the abundant power from Barakah unlocks significant long-term benefits for the UAE’s low-carbon economy.

Abdulnasser Bin Kalban, CEO of EGA, noted that global demand for low-carbon aluminium is projected to triple by 2040, and EGA is committed to playing a key role in this growth. MinimAL, enabled by the UAE’s nuclear energy investment, represents their latest low-carbon product, and EGA is pleased to collaborate with ENEC to expand global supply.

Mutassem Daaboul, Managing Director of CANEX Aluminum, stated that true sustainability permeates every stage of production at CANEX—from raw materials to finished products. Their upcycling approach already converts waste into value-added goods, and with MinimAL, they are further reducing embedded emissions from the very start of the production process.

The clean electricity powering this aluminium is certified through the UAE’s Clean Energy Certification program, following International REC Standard (I-REC) protocols to guarantee transparency and credibility. Power is delivered via the national grid through Emirates Water and Electricity Company (EWEC).

Barakah produces 40 terawatt-hours of clean electricity annually, meeting about 25% of the UAE’s electricity demand—equivalent to Switzerland’s total annual consumption. The plant’s carbon-free electricity prevents 22.4 million tons of CO2 emissions yearly, equal to removing 4.8 million cars from the roads.

EGA was the first global producer of aluminium powered by solar energy, manufacturing 80,000 tonnes of CelestiAL in 2024. It also produces recycled aluminium under the RevivAL brand at facilities in the US and Germany. In the UAE, EGA is constructing the country’s largest aluminium recycling plant in Al Taweelah, expected to begin operations in the first half of 2026.
