Abu Dhabi among seven global cities to host China's 'Spring Festival' celebrations

emirates7 - Umm Al Emarat Park in Abu Dhabi hosted a grand cultural event to mark the Chinese New Year, celebrated as the “Year of the Snake.” The event was organized by the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in the UAE in partnership with China Media Group and formed part of the capital’s broader festivities for this global occasion.

This celebration is one of the Spring Festival promotional activities led by China Media Group to honor the Chinese New Year. Abu Dhabi was chosen as one of seven global cities to host the festivities, highlighting the strong bilateral relations and cultural exchange between the UAE and China. The event carried added significance as it followed the 40th anniversary of diplomatic ties between the two nations last year.

Dr. Jamal Mohammed Obaid Al Kaabi, Director-General of the National Media Office, told Emirates News Agency (WAM) that hosting the Chinese New Year celebration in Abu Dhabi underscores shared values across diverse cultures. He noted that such events promote cultural dialogue and understanding on a global scale.

Dr. Al Kaabi also emphasized that UAE-China relations reflect strategic cooperation in cultural and social spheres, aligning with the leadership’s vision for fostering cultural connections and global openness.

Shen Haixiong, President of China Media Group (CMG), described the Spring Festival as one of the most important traditional celebrations in Chinese culture, representing national unity and social harmony. He added that CMG aims to share the richness of Chinese culture globally through these festivities, communicating in 82 languages and building cultural bridges between nations.

Zhang Yiming, the Chinese Ambassador to the UAE, expressed his pleasure at Abu Dhabi hosting the event, praising the city’s role as a global hub for tolerance and cultural coexistence. He highlighted the unique importance of this year’s celebration as the first since the Chinese Lunar New Year was recognized on UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage list.

The ambassador also noted that the festivities offer a sense of home to the nearly 400,000 Chinese residents in the UAE while giving Emiratis and other residents the chance to experience Chinese culture.

In Chinese tradition, the snake symbolizes good fortune and wealth, representing a year of prosperity and success ahead.
