‘Abu Al Abyad’ Dhow Sailing Race to launch next Saturday

emirates7 - The Abu Dhabi Marine Sports Club has announced the upcoming Abu Al Abyad Dhow Sailing Race for the 60ft category, scheduled for next Saturday, under the patronage of H.H. Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Ruler's Representative in the Al Dhafra Region.

This event marks the second round of the season’s traditional racing programme, which aims to preserve the UAE's maritime heritage. Registration for the race is now open on the club's official website, where participants can find detailed rules, regulations, and logistical information. The updates to the rules, which were successfully introduced last season, received positive feedback from dhow owners, captains, and sailors.

The race will offer valuable prizes for the winners and top finishers. The exact starting location and distance will be determined based on weather conditions, with the dhows heading towards the finish line near the Abu Dhabi Marine Sports Club on the Abu Dhabi Corniche.

Sheikh Mohammed bin Sultan bin Khalifa Al Nahyan, Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Marine Sports Club, praised the leadership's continued support for heritage sports, especially maritime traditions. He emphasized that this support helps strengthen the bond between generations and ensures the preservation of the legacy of the UAE’s ancestors.

He also expressed gratitude for the patronage of H.H. Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, highlighting its importance in elevating the event's significance for participants, organisers, and spectators alike.

Sheikh Mohammed added, “The 60ft dhow sailing races are the most prestigious category, attracting the most skilled captains and sailors. These races embody the challenges faced by our ancestors who relied on the sea for their livelihood and trade. The Abu Al Abyad Race is a highlight of the season, known for its significant participation and intense competition.”
