WGS positions media as global force in shaping policy, identity, geopolitical narratives

emirates7 - The World Governments Summit Organisation (WGS) recently hosted a high-level dialogue titled “Media, Geopolitics, and the Future of Global Narratives,” highlighting the media’s expanding role in shaping public opinion and influencing policy amid a rapidly evolving global landscape.

The session brought together Pedro Vargas David, Chairman of Euronews and CEO of Alpac Capital, along with key media executives, policymakers, and public and private sector leaders.

Discussions centred on how media must evolve in response to shifting geopolitical dynamics, embrace innovation with accountability, and promote narratives that reflect societal progress, inclusivity, and diversity.

Mohamed Yousef Al Sharhan, WGS Managing Director, stressed the importance of responsible journalism in today’s polarised world, noting that media has become more than a platform for reporting—it now plays a strategic role in shaping public consciousness and informing policy decisions.

Pedro Vargas David underscored media’s critical place in society, saying, “Media is a pillar of the societal ecosystem. In an era of growing misinformation, reliable journalism must serve as a stabilising force for informed dialogue and international cooperation.”

Key topics addressed included:

Shifting global storytelling from crisis-focused to innovation-driven narratives
Euronews’ targeted expansion into Asia, the Gulf, and Africa with culturally relevant editorial strategies
Balancing European editorial identity with local relevance in new markets
Navigating AI and algorithmic impact while protecting content quality and editorial integrity
Preserving media’s cultural relevance in an interconnected world

Participants represented WGS’s strategic membership network, including entities such as the Telecommunications and Digital Government Regulatory Authority, Dubai Chambers, Dubai Investments, G42, General Motors, Amazon Web Services, The National, and Oracle.

The dialogue reaffirmed WGS’s dedication to enabling global discussions at the intersection of media, governance, and technology—paving the way for more inclusive, forward-thinking global narratives.
