emirates7 - The Fundação Getulio Vargas (FGV), through its International Affairs Division (FGV DINT), in collaboration with the Embassy of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in Brazil, hosted a distinguished fireside chat featuring Reem Al Hashimy, UAE Minister of State for International Cooperation, at FGV’s headquarters in Rio de Janeiro.
Titled BRICS & Beyond: A High-Level Dialogue, the event convened policymakers, diplomats, academics, business leaders, and FGV students to explore the UAE’s engagement with BRICS, its growing strategic partnership with Brazil, and broader opportunities for cooperation across Latin America and the Mercosur region.
Minister Al Hashimy outlined the UAE’s vision for deepening ties with Brazil, particularly in trade, sustainability, renewable energy, green technology, and innovation-driven industries. She emphasized the UAE’s belief in the power of diversity and its commitment to building connections through dialogue, partnerships, and shared prosperity.
Highlighting the UAE’s participation in BRICS, Al Hashimy described the group as a vital platform for collaboration among emerging economies and a vehicle for promoting global peace, stability, and inclusive economic growth. She noted that the UAE’s involvement in BRICS reflects its broader foreign policy priorities, including fostering cultural multilateralism and constructive international engagement.
She further detailed the UAE’s strategic goals within BRICS—such as enhancing economic ties with member nations, positioning the UAE as a global economic hub, and expanding its network of strategic partnerships.
Al Hashimy reaffirmed the UAE’s commitment to tripling global renewable energy capacity by 2030, in line with the UAE Consensus—a landmark agreement signed by 198 parties at the COP28 climate summit held in Dubai in 2023. She spotlighted key bilateral initiatives with Brazil, including joint ventures in solar energy and strategic minerals, and referenced a Memorandum of Understanding set for January 2025, which aims to boost investments and facilitate technology transfer in vital sectors such as mineral processing and green energy.
She also stressed the value of people-to-people connections as a cornerstone for long-term cooperation, citing cultural, educational, and professional exchanges as vital instruments to deepen UAE–Brazil relations.
The session was moderated by Catherine Osborn, a journalist and foreign correspondent based in Brazil and columnist for Foreign Policy. The opening remarks were delivered by FGV President Carlos Ivan Simonsen Leal, who emphasized education’s pivotal role in fostering mutual understanding and lasting cooperation. He underscored FGV’s mission to serve as a global hub for academic exchange and policy dialogue and reaffirmed its dedication to advancing strategic ties with key global regions, including the Gulf.
Marlos Lima, FGV’s Director for International Affairs, highlighted the importance of events like this in equipping future leaders with technical skills, ethical grounding, and a global outlook, as well as in strengthening international collaboration through knowledge-sharing and education.
Overall, the dialogue served as a dynamic platform for forward-thinking discussions, underlining the deepening partnership between Brazil and the UAE, and reinforcing FGV and the UAE Embassy’s joint commitment to fostering high-level dialogue, strategic cooperation, and global engagement.
