emirates7 - Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD and CEO of Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA), announced that Dubai's energy demand saw a 5.4% increase in 2024 compared to 2023.
Al Tayer stated that energy demand in 2024 reached 59,594 gigawatt hours (GWh), up from 56,516 GWh in 2023.
He further highlighted that DEWA is continuously expanding the capacity of its transmission and distribution networks, developing state-of-the-art electricity and water infrastructure to keep up with Dubai’s population growth and the ongoing expansion of the Emirate's economy.
"Under the visionary leadership of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister, and Ruler of Dubai, Dubai has become a global city and a top destination for living, working, and doing business, as well as a major tourism hub. The city's growth, both urban and economic, drives DEWA’s sustainable development, supported by the increasing demand for energy and water," Al Tayer remarked.
DEWA’s installed generation capacity reached 17.179 GW, with clean energy making up 20% of the total installed power generation capacity. This aligns with the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050 and the Dubai Net Zero Carbon Emissions Strategy 2050, which aims to source 100% of energy production from clean energy by 2050.
In 2024, DEWA also saw a significant 3.4% increase in peak demand compared to 2023, reaching 10.76 GW.
