Estonian Minister highlights UAE partnership as model for successful agricultural cooperation

emirates7 - Piret Hartman, Estonia's Minister of Regional Affairs and Agriculture, praised the strong agricultural partnership between Estonia and the UAE, describing it as a global success story.

She highlighted significant progress in recent years, attributing it to Estonia’s active engagement in major events hosted by the UAE. Speaking to the Emirates News Agency (WAM), Hartman noted Estonia's consistent participation in the Gulfood exhibition over the past seven years, with a dedicated pavilion showcasing its agricultural and food products. Preparations are already underway for Estonia’s eighth consecutive appearance at the event.

The Minister emphasized the role of Estonian companies in fostering partnerships, increasing trade, and introducing innovative agricultural products. She also pointed to a milestone achievement in February 2024—the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the UAE’s Ministry of Climate Change and Environment, Estonia’s Ministry of Regional Affairs and Agriculture, and Estonia’s Ministry of Climate. This agreement aims to strengthen collaboration in food security, agricultural innovation, and water resource management.

Hartman highlighted the robust trade relationship between the two nations, built on shared values of innovation, sustainability, and food security. She underscored the growing demand in the GCC region for sustainable, high-quality, and traceable food products, which presents valuable opportunities for Estonian companies known for their innovative approach and commitment to these standards. The rising trade volumes and increasing presence of Estonian brands in the UAE reflect Estonia’s status as a trusted partner.

The Minister noted that agricultural cooperation between Estonia and the UAE has the potential to significantly contribute to sustainable development goals and enhance food security in the region. She emphasized Estonia’s support for multilateral initiatives through organizations such as the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the World Food Programme (WFP), the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), and the World Health Organization (WHO) to address global food insecurity.

Hartman also highlighted opportunities for expanding collaboration with the UAE in areas like agritourism and the promotion of agricultural products, citing ongoing discussions and a shared interest in exploring new avenues. She expressed optimism about developing a regional model of sustainable agricultural cooperation with the UAE, leveraging innovation to strengthen food security and establish a lasting partnership.
