emirates7 - The 31st International Conference on Computational Linguistics (COLING 2025) is set to begin tomorrow in Abu Dhabi, hosted by Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence (MBZUAI), and will welcome over 1,500 global participants.
Held under the International Committee on Computational Linguistics (ICCL), COLING will take place at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre (ADNEC) from January 19-24, 2025. The event also features the inaugural Winter School on Arabic Natural Language Processing, co-organized by NYU Abu Dhabi and MBZUAI, scheduled for January 18-19.
Supported by the Abu Dhabi Convention and Exhibition Bureau (ADCEB), part of the Department of Tourism and Culture – Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi), this marks the first time COLING is hosted in the Middle East. The program includes 22 workshops, nine tutorials, keynote addresses, and the Winter School, aimed at advancing Arabic NLP research and development.
“COLING 2025 brings together leading experts in AI and computational linguistics, offering an unmatched platform for collaboration and innovation,” stated Professor Preslav Nakov, Department Chair and Professor of NLP at MBZUAI, and Chair of the local organizing committee. “As language technology transforms human-machine interaction, we look forward to exploring how these advancements can address regional and global challenges.”
First established in 1965, this biennial conference draws participation from research institutions, academia, industrial R&D, and tech startups worldwide. For the 2025 conference, 853 papers were accepted, including 22 contributions by MBZUAI students and faculty.
COLING 2025 is the second high-profile NLP conference hosted in Abu Dhabi, following the 2022 Conference on Empirical Methods in Natural Language Processing (EMNLP), co-organized by NYU Abu Dhabi and MBZUAI. The city also hosted the 2024 editions of the IEEE International Conference on Data Mining (ICDM) and the IEEE/RSJ International Conference on Intelligent Robots and Systems (IROS).
“Abu Dhabi blends tradition with modernity and embodies values of connectivity, learning, and exploration—ideals that align closely with our scientific community,” added Nakov. “We are proud to highlight our region’s commitment to technological and linguistic innovation.”
In 2024, the UAE ranked fifth in the Global AI Power Rankings, while MBZUAI was recognized as one of the top 10 global universities specializing in AI, computer vision, machine learning, NLP, robotics, and computational biology. It also ranks among the top 85 computer science universities worldwide, according to CSRankings.
