emirates7 - The General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) has introduced the region's first digital platform dedicated to implementing the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA).
CORSIA, a global initiative adopted by the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) in 2016 and implemented in 2019, provides a framework to mitigate international aviation emissions while considering the unique circumstances of each country. The new platform plays a crucial role in facilitating CORSIA by streamlining the calculation of carbon offset and reduction values for units used by national carriers.
The scheme requires airlines and operators to offset any unavoidable carbon dioxide emissions—those not reduced through technology, operational improvements, or sustainable aviation fuel—using carbon market emission units.
Saif Mohammed Al Suwaidi, Director-General of the GCAA, emphasized the UAE's commitment to meeting global and international standards for reducing aviation emissions. He highlighted the UAE's longstanding collaboration with ICAO since the organization's first climate resolution for aviation in 2010. He noted the recent adoption of the "Dubai Framework for Aviation Fuel" in November 2023, which aims to reduce international aviation emissions by 5% by 2030.
Al Suwaidi also stated that CORSIA is the sole globally approved framework for managing aviation emissions, covering all fuel standards and future developments.
The launch of the digital platform marks a transition from the previous manual data submission process used by national carriers over the past four years. The automated system enhances efficiency, ensures data confidentiality, reduces review times, and minimizes human error.
In addition to its operational benefits, the platform functions as a comprehensive archival system, maintaining a digital record of international emissions data. This capability will support the development of future tools and applications aimed at further reducing and offsetting carbon emissions in the aviation sector.
