emirates7 - The Emirates Water and Electricity Company (EWEC) has received approval to designate four new sites, covering a total area of approximately 75 square kilometers, for the development of advanced solar photovoltaic (PV) and wind energy projects.
Located across Abu Dhabi, the sites will host three solar PV plants in Al Faya, Al Khazna, and Al Zarraf, alongside a wind farm in Sila. These projects are set to deliver an additional 4.5 gigawatts (GW) (AC) of solar PV capacity and up to 140 megawatts of wind capacity to Abu Dhabi’s energy portfolio.
The solar PV developments will contribute to EWEC’s goal of achieving 10 GW of installed solar PV capacity by 2030 and 18 GW by 2035. These efforts align with the Abu Dhabi Department of Energy’s (DoE) Clean Energy Strategic Target 2035 and the UAE’s Net Zero by 2050 Strategic Initiative.
Ahmed Mohamed Al Rumaithi, Undersecretary of the DoE, emphasized the importance of securing land for renewable energy projects, stating, “This step advances our sustainable energy goals and aligns with the DoE’s regulatory framework to achieve a low-carbon economy. Our collaboration ensures transformative solutions that decarbonize the energy sector, reduce emissions, and support the UAE’s Net Zero by 2050 objectives.”
Dr. Shaikha Salem Al Dhaheri, Secretary-General of the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD), highlighted the significance of the initiative in balancing energy development with environmental conservation. She remarked, “Our collaboration with EWEC and partners underscores our commitment to environmental sustainability, supporting Abu Dhabi’s Climate Change Strategy and the UAE’s carbon neutrality goals by 2050.”
Othman Al Ali, EWEC’s Chief Executive Officer, added, “This land allocation accelerates the development of world-class renewable projects, enabling us to meet 60 percent of Abu Dhabi’s power needs through clean energy sources while advancing the nation’s sustainability goals.”
The identification and acquisition of these sites were made possible through EWEC’s collaboration with key partners, including the Department of Culture and Tourism, DoE, ADNOC, the Department of Municipalities and Transport, EAD, and the Ministry of Defence. This joint effort underscores a shared commitment to decarbonizing the UAE’s energy sector and addressing climate change challenges.
