Emirates Global Aluminium begins construction of reduction cells for EX smelting technology

emirates7 - Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA) has officially begun construction on 10 pilot reduction cells for EX, its next-generation smelting technology. Located at Al Taweelah, this pilot project will demonstrate the latest Industry 4.0 advancements in the aluminium industry, building on EGA's established leadership in research and development and digital technologies.

EX is designed to produce aluminium more efficiently, using less energy and reducing emissions. It incorporates advanced Internet of Things (IoT) sensors and connections to facilitate real-time data collection, enhancing the application of Industry 4.0 practices.

EGA plans to apply its existing Industry 4.0 innovations, such as pot failure prediction and AI-powered smart cranes, within the EX technology. Additionally, the company aims to develop new digital capabilities, leveraging artificial intelligence and advanced data analytics to further optimize operations. The increased use of sensors and data will enable AI-driven autonomous control of pots, cranes, and vehicles, improving process integration, minimizing disruptions, and boosting efficiency. Machine learning will help refine processes and task planning, ensuring that EX technology performs at its maximum potential.

EGA expects the first hot metal from the pilot reduction cells to be produced in the first half of 2025, with plans for large-scale industrial implementation of EX, including advanced Industry 4.0 features, by 2028.

Abdulnasser Bin Kalban, CEO of EGA, commented, "EGA has been a leader in aluminium smelting innovation for over three decades. Today marks a significant step toward creating a self-optimising, autonomous production system that will be the most efficient in the world. This is a key part of our growth strategy and commitment to sustainability in the industry."
