emirates7 - At the third Global Women’s Forum Dubai 2024, experts emphasized the necessity for policymakers and governments worldwide to adopt an integrated approach to gender equality, aligning it with sustainable development plans as the 2030 milestone for the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) approaches.
Hanan Ahli, Managing Director of the UAE’s Federal Competitiveness & Statistics Centre, highlighted the nation's progress, stating, "The UAE’s score in implementing SDG5, which focuses on gender equality and women empowerment, now stands at 83 percent, reflecting the UAE Government’s commitment to sustainable development and equal opportunity for all, regardless of gender."
Other session participants included Prof. Eeva Furman, Secretary-General of the Finnish National Commission on Sustainable Development; Safaa El-Kogali, GCC Country Director at The World Bank; and Rania Tarazi, Gender Team Leader at the UNDP.
Rania Tarazi noted the persistent challenges, stating, "Women have not made significant progress in areas like STEM, new technology, and energy transformation."
Safaa El-Kogali acknowledged global advancements in reducing extreme poverty, benefiting 80 million people, and increasing educational enrollment. However, she pointed out that the COVID-19 pandemic has reversed some of these gains.
She emphasized the need for collective action, stating, "We need to come together; no single country can achieve this alone," and highlighted the importance of sustainable financing, leveraging the private sector for development.
The session underscored the critical need for integrated strategies to achieve gender equality and sustainable development, urging global collaboration and innovative financing solutions.
