emirates7 - TRANSCO, a subsidiary of the Abu Dhabi National Energy Company (TAQA), has achieved four key milestones in advancing the UAE's sustainable energy goals.
The company has successfully activated two of the UAE's largest phase-shifting transformers in Abu Dhabi and commissioned the country's largest dynamic reactive power system, alongside a utility-scale reactive power system in Al Ain.
Dr. Afif Al Yafei, CEO of TRANSCO, emphasized that these initiatives are essential for ensuring the resilience of the energy network, especially as the country transitions to a more sustainable energy mix, incorporating low-carbon sources like solar and nuclear power.
The newly activated phase-shifting transformers in Abu Dhabi, commissioned in May and August of this year, play a critical role in controlling power flow within the grid. These transformers enhance flow control, ensuring balanced energy distribution, minimizing power loss, and improving grid management, while also facilitating the integration of renewable energy sources.
Additionally, TRANSCO made a significant move in September 2024 by commissioning the UAE’s largest dynamic reactive power system, known as a STATCOM, in Al Ain’s Zakher area. This is the first of 29 planned reactive power systems that will be deployed across the Abu Dhabi grid in the coming years.
