emirates7 - Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA) has introduced advanced wearable safety technology as part of its annual “Beat the Heat” campaign, aimed at preventing heat-related illnesses among industrial workers during the intense UAE summer.
Working outdoors in the UAE’s high temperatures poses a serious health risk and can be fatal if not addressed. EGA’s operations, which include heat-intensive processes that run continuously, further increase this risk. However, the company has reported zero cases of heat-related illness since 2021, establishing itself as a global leader in heat safety.
Since 2022, EGA has been testing wearable devices that track key health indicators during summer operations. The latest version of this technology, built to withstand harsh industrial conditions like those in smelters, features improved location tracking, strong connectivity, and real-time data sharing with supervisors and medical personnel. These devices can automatically schedule rest breaks if a worker’s core temperature exceeds a certain threshold.
The “Beat the Heat” programme, now running for over ten years, is a company-wide initiative designed to raise awareness about early symptoms of heat stress and empower employees to prevent it. This year, EGA has also installed full-body cooling units at its medical centres and in work areas in Jebel Ali and Al Taweelah. These cooling suits offer quick, non-invasive methods to reduce body temperature in emergency situations.
EGA CEO Abdulnasser bin Kalban emphasized the seriousness of heat-related risks in the region, noting that the company's objective each summer is to maintain zero incidents. He highlighted the role of technology in strengthening the effectiveness of the programme.
The campaign also includes hydration testing before and during work shifts, scheduled breaks in cool environments, access to cooling showers, and rest areas. To help workers stay cool and hydrated, EGA provides facilities such as drinking water stations, ice machines, cooling booths, and portable air conditioners throughout its sites.
