emirates7 - Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA) has announced the extension of its supply agreement for CelestiAL-R with the BMW Group for the coming years. CelestiAL-R is the world’s first aluminium blend produced using solar power and recycled metal. The BMW Group uses this sustainable aluminium to manufacture high-quality components for its vehicles.
To mark the signing of the renewed agreement, Oliver Zipse, Chairman of the Board of Management of BMW AG, visited EGA’s Jebel Ali plant and the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park. EGA has been supplying aluminium to BMW since 2013, and the BMW Group became the first customer of CelestiAL solar aluminium in 2021. Since early 2023, all aluminium provided to BMW has been CelestiAL-R.
Under the new agreement, EGA will continue to supply BMW with tens of thousands of tonnes of CelestiAL-R annually, with plans to further increase the proportion of recycled metal used in the production.
Abdulnasser bin Kalban, CEO of EGA, emphasized that the BMW Group's demand for the highest quality solar-powered metal drives EGA's innovation. He also noted the technical challenges of producing consistent high-quality metal from diverse scrap, with EGA using advanced chemical analysis to ensure the metal meets exact specifications.
Aluminium is highly recyclable, requiring 95% less energy than producing new metal and generating significantly fewer emissions. EGA sources recycled aluminium from local suppliers and is building the UAE’s largest recycling facility in Al Taweelah, set to begin production in 2026 with a capacity of 170,000 tonnes of secondary billets per year.
