emirates7 - The UAE's Ministry of Economy has reported substantial growth in intellectual property (IP) registrations in the first nine months of 2024, highlighting the country's success in creating an environment conducive to innovation.
The registration of trademarks, patents, and utility certificates has seen notable increases, indicating advancements in supporting research, development, and entrepreneurship across both economic and scientific fields.
Compared to the same period in 2023, IP registrations in the UAE grew by 34.3 percent in 2024, with trademark registrations climbing 39.12 percent and registrations for patents, utility certificates, and industrial designs rising by 8 percent. The Ministry recorded 1,884 IP works, up from 1,402 last year, bringing the cumulative total to 20,389.
Demand for IP registration has increased across various sectors, with the Ministry receiving 1,946 applications, marking a 53.23 percent rise from the previous year’s 1,270 applications. Additionally, there were 153 reports of IP violations, and 209 applications to register IP rights for importers and distributors were processed, reflecting a 26.67 percent increase.
By September 2024, the UAE attracted 18,175 new trademarks, representing a 39 percent year-over-year rise. The Ministry handled 24,258 trademark registration applications and 8,171 inquiries, bringing the total active trademarks in the UAE to 356,408.
Additionally, registrations for patents, utility certificates, and industrial designs rose by 8 percent, totaling 15,051 by the end of September. Applications for these IP assets increased by 3.8 percent, with 3,489 submissions, compared to the same period in 2023.
Abdullah Ahmed Al Saleh, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Economy, highlighted that these results reflect the UAE's commitment to building a strong IP ecosystem aligned with international standards, emphasizing the role of knowledge and creativity in economic development. The Ministry has focused on enhancing legislation and launching initiatives tailored to both industrial and creative sectors.
Al Saleh underscored the Ministry's commitment, in collaboration with public and private partners, to providing resources to foster growth and competitiveness within the IP sector. This effort aligns with the ‘We the UAE 2031’ vision, which aims to establish the UAE as one of the top 10 global destinations for talent.
