UAE to invest $30 million to support Ghana’s biodiversity, climate goals

emirates7 - The United Arab Emirates and Ghana have announced a US$30 million collaboration focused on nature-based community development and climate solutions, outlining key areas for initial investment. Dr. Amna bint Abdullah Al Shamsi, UAE Minister of Climate Change and the Environment, and Samuel A. Jinapor, Ghana’s Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, signed a letter of intent, witnessed by Razan Khalifa Al Mubarak, UN Climate Change High-Level Champion for COP28 and IUCN President, and Abdulla Balalaa, UAE Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs for Energy and Sustainability.

The agreement highlights six areas of investment, including biodiversity corridors, reforestation, and agroecology, which will support climate action, biodiversity, and community development, with a focus on gender equality and youth engagement. Falling under Ghana's Resilient Ghana nature-climate strategy, the framework also outlines methods for tracking, reporting, and verification through Ghana's REDD+ initiative.

Dr. Al Shamsi emphasized that this partnership reflects the UAE’s commitment to global biodiversity, climate, and development goals. The initiative supports the UAE Consensus, which aims to halt and reverse deforestation by 2030, and will contribute to afforestation efforts in Ghana while benefiting local communities. Jinapor highlighted that while Ghana is receiving carbon payments, the partnership with the UAE will provide crucial financial support for further emission reduction efforts, protecting ecosystems, and enhancing livelihoods.

Razan Khalifa Al Mubarak praised the UAE-Ghana partnership as a model for addressing both nature and climate goals, reinforcing the 1.5-degree Celsius climate target while advancing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and biodiversity protection.

As part of the UAE Consensus adopted at COP28, nations committed to halting deforestation by 2030 and aligning their climate actions with the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework. The UAE and its partners have mobilized over $2 billion for nature-climate projects, including investments supporting Ghana's Resilient Ghana strategy. The initial projects under this UAE-Ghana partnership will be presented at COP29 in Baku in November, with further developments to follow at COP30.
