UAE concludes participation in COP29

emirates7 - The UAE concluded its successful participation in COP29, reinforcing its commitment to global climate action and continuing the legacy of COP28.

President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan attended the opening of the World Climate Action Summit, and the UAE delegation played an active role throughout the conference. This included the handover of the COP Presidency to Azerbaijan on the opening day, participation in plenary sessions, high-level dialogues, and presentations at the UAE Pavilion under the theme “Accelerating Action Together.”

Building on the achievements of COP28, the UAE demonstrated its commitment to global climate leadership. Abdulla Balalaa, Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs for Energy and Sustainability, praised the UAE's long-standing dedication to climate action, highlighting the achievements of COP28 and the UAE Consensus. He expressed congratulations to Azerbaijan for hosting COP29 and emphasized the importance of global cooperation in addressing climate challenges. Significant progress was made during COP29, including the operationalization of the Loss & Damage Fund, which has reached $850 million, and technological advancements showcasing the potential of innovative solutions to turn current climate issues into future opportunities.

The UAE delegation at COP29 included over 1,000 members, including ministers and key figures in UAE climate action, such as H.H. Lt General Sheikh Saif bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, and Dr. Amna bint Abdullah Al Dahak, Minister of Climate Change and Environment, among others. The UAE Pavilion saw thousands of visitors, including representatives from various global organizations, and hosted numerous discussions on climate action and sustainability.

Several key initiatives were launched or updated during COP29, such as the Fund for Responding to Loss and Damage (FRLD), the Global Energy Efficiency Alliance, and the Agriculture Innovation Mission for Climate (AIM for Climate), which announced $29.2 billion in new investments. Other notable developments included the launch of AIM for Scale, a ChatGPT tool for agriculture, and the signing of agreements for solar and wind projects, such as a 2-GW solar project in Saudi Arabia. Sheikha Shamma bint Sultan Al Nahyan was appointed Chair of the Waste to Zero initiative.

The UAE also signed several important declarations, including those related to energy storage, green energy, and water for climate action. Over 255 speakers participated in 62 programmes at the UAE Pavilion, focusing on building climate resilience and co-creating solutions for global challenges. Additionally, the UAE hosted two major programmes at Goals House, discussing climate finance and water resiliency.

Looking ahead, the UAE will continue its climate efforts with Global Food Week in Abu Dhabi (26-28 November) and at COP16 in Riyadh the following week, focusing on sustainable food systems and furthering climate action.
