emirates7 - In a major step forward for cancer prevention and treatment, the Abu Dhabi Public Health Centre (ADPHC), in collaboration with M42, has launched a non-invasive blood-based screening test for colorectal cancer, known as liquid biopsy. This innovative screening aligns with the latest developments in Abu Dhabi’s healthcare sector, highlighting the region’s dedication to world-class cancer diagnosis and care, as well as promoting preventive health measures.
The liquid biopsy test serves as a complementary tool to colonoscopy, which remains the gold standard for colorectal cancer diagnosis. It plays a vital role in assessing risk and detecting early signs of tumors or precancerous growths in the colon. This advancement is expected to significantly improve early detection and support efforts in the fight against colorectal cancer.
Dr. Ahmed AlKhazraji, Acting Director General of ADPHC, emphasized the importance of prioritizing community health through early cancer detection. He highlighted that the non-invasive nature of the liquid biopsy makes screening more accessible and comfortable, thereby encouraging more people to participate in regular screenings. This initiative is in line with Abu Dhabi's broader commitment to population health, integrating cutting-edge technologies for personalized and preventative care.
The liquid biopsy test will be available as part of the Integrated Family Health and Screening Programme (IFHAS) and can be accessed at key healthcare centres of Ambulatory Healthcare Services (AHS) and M42 across Abu Dhabi, Al Ain, and the Al Dhafra Region.
Dr. Fahed Al Marzooqi, Deputy COO of M42, emphasized that this initiative aims to enhance early detection of colorectal cancer, a leading cause of cancer-related deaths, by offering a more accessible, non-invasive screening method. The goal is to increase participation rates and improve health outcomes, ultimately contributing to a healthier UAE population.
Routine screening is crucial for preventing colorectal cancer and improving survival rates. The Department of Health – Abu Dhabi recommends regular screenings for all individuals over the age of 40. Colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer in Abu Dhabi, with men experiencing a higher incidence. In 2023, 67% of new colorectal cancer cases in Abu Dhabi were diagnosed at advanced stages, which negatively impacts health outcomes and reduces survival rates. The introduction of the liquid biopsy test marks a significant advancement in improving early detection, increasing screening participation, and enhancing outcomes for the community.
