UAE, Egypt sign MoUs in manufacturing, renewable energy, developing industrial zone in East Port Said

emirates7 - Dr. Mostafa Madbouly, Prime Minister of Egypt, Dr. Sultan Al Jaber, UAE Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology, Kamel Al Wazir, Egypt’s Deputy Prime Minister for Industrial Affairs and Minister of Industry and Transport, and Dr. Mahmoud Esmat, Egypt’s Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy, attended the signing of several Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) at the Egyptian Parliament's headquarters in the New Administrative Capital.

The ceremony was also attended by Colonel Dr. Bahaa El-Ghannam, Executive Director of the Future of Egypt for Sustainable Development Authority, Mariam Khalifa Al Kaabi, UAE Ambassador to Egypt, and Syed Basar Shueb, CEO of International Holding Company (IHC).

These agreements reflect the shared vision of the UAE and Egypt to promote sustainable economic growth and foster new industrial and technological investments. They aim to strengthen strategic partnerships in key sectors such as industry, renewable energy, and the development of a joint UAE-Egypt industrial zone in East Port Said.

Dr. Al Jaber conveyed the UAE leadership’s commitment to exploring cooperation opportunities in critical sectors, including advanced industries, infrastructure, and renewable energy. These initiatives are intended to stimulate growth, strengthen supply chain resilience, and enhance self-sufficiency.

The MoUs include plans to establish two plants—one for solar cells and another for solar panels, each with a capacity of 2 GW—and a 2 GW battery energy storage facility. Additional MoUs focus on clean energy projects, such as the study of a 900 MW solar power plant in Dakhla Oasis, a 300 MW solar plant in Benban, Aswan, and a 3 GW floating photovoltaic solar plant on Lake Nasser.

The signed agreements also include the development of the UAE-Egypt industrial zone in East Port Said, a 20-square-kilometre area aimed at attracting investments in renewable energy, manufacturing, and advanced technologies. This zone will contribute to Egypt’s economic growth as an integrated industrial and logistics hub.

Furthermore, the MoUs include partnerships for energy storage plants, with one project aimed at producing solar cells and another for solar panels, both with 2 GW capacities. These agreements were signed by key figures from the Industrial Modernisation Centre (IMC) and Global South Utilities (GSU). Another energy storage plant will be explored in collaboration with Weigheng and Encap.

Masdar, Infinity Power, and Hassan Allam Utilities signed a principal agreement with the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company for solar power plants with a total capacity of 1.2 GW, along with energy storage systems. Masdar also signed MoUs for the development of the floating solar plant on Lake Nasser and a 2 GW solar plant in Naga Hammadi.

Egypt’s Prime Minister emphasized that these agreements are vital to supporting the country’s industrial growth, under President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi’s directives to optimize the country’s industrial capabilities. They also align with Egypt’s Integrated Sustainable Energy Strategy 2035, focusing on renewable energy, efficiency, and energy security.

Dr. Al Jaber highlighted that these projects strengthen the relationship between the UAE and Egypt, emphasizing industrial integration, the growth of the renewable energy sector, and infrastructure development in the East Port Said Industrial Zone. These agreements are expected to jobs, promote the exchange of knowledge, and reduce carbon emissions while advancing sustainability.

Al Wazir stressed Egypt’s commitment to enhancing renewable energy use, aiming to have green industries contribute 5% of GDP by 2030. Dr. Esmat noted that these projects will increase Egypt's reliance on renewable energy, improve grid stability, and reduce carbon emissions, with the first phase of the projects expected to start in 2025.

The UAE-Egypt Industrial Zone, strategically located along the Mediterranean, is designed to attract investments in sectors such as manufacturing, technology, and renewable energy. AD Ports Group will play a central role in developing its infrastructure, further supporting Egypt's economic growth. These agreements open new opportunities for collaboration between the UAE and Egypt, driving sustainable development and meeting the strategic objectives of both nations.
