emirates7 - In alignment with the vision of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister of the UAE, and Ruler of Dubai, to advance strategic and future-ready infrastructure, Dubai Municipality has awarded contracts worth AED 1.439 billion for four major initiatives under the ‘Tasreef’ project. These developments aim to expand, rehabilitate, and modernize Dubai’s stormwater drainage system.
These projects are part of Dubai’s broader objective to establish sustainable and climate-resilient infrastructure, reinforcing the city’s global reputation as a leader in infrastructure readiness and innovation. The new contracts support the Tasreef project—Dubai’s most extensive and efficient unified stormwater collection system—serving vital districts such as Nad Al Hamar, areas near Dubai International Airport, Al Garhoud, Al Rashidiya, Al Quoz, Zabeel, Al Wasl, Jumeirah, and Al Badaa.
The awarded works focus on delivering innovative and sustainable flood mitigation solutions, boosting the performance of the current drainage systems, and raising service standards for both residents and businesses. Over 36 kilometers of new drainage lines will be constructed, connecting to the central Tasreef tunnel, which will eventually integrate drainage systems throughout the emirate. These enhancements will significantly expand drainage capacity in the targeted areas, reduce maintenance and operational costs, and elevate the overall efficiency of service delivery.
Engineer Marwan Ahmed bin Ghalita, Acting Director General of Dubai Municipality, highlighted that these new projects represent a major advancement in the ongoing implementation of the Tasreef initiative. He noted that the upgrades will increase the stormwater system’s capacity by 700% over the next century, cementing Dubai’s status as a global leader in resilient and forward-thinking infrastructure.
He emphasized: “Tasreef is a transformative and strategic project led by Dubai Municipality to develop infrastructure in line with the highest standards of urban planning and sustainability. It contributes to our broader goals of integrated stormwater and surface water management, delivering future-ready and environmentally responsible solutions. These developments support our vision of positioning Dubai as a more sustainable, livable, and attractive city every day.”
With a total projected investment of AED 30 billion, the Tasreef project stands as the largest initiative of its kind in Dubai. It is designed to be scalable over the next 100 years and aims to cut construction, operation, and maintenance costs for stormwater systems by 20%, while also extending the infrastructure’s lifespan.
