emirates7 - China on Friday announced an action plan to advance new forms of energy storage between 2025 and 2027, as part of its efforts to accelerate the green energy transition and strengthen the stability of modern power systems.
Under the plan, the country targets installing over 180 million kilowatts of new-type energy storage capacity by 2027, which is expected to generate around 250 billion yuan (US$35.2 billion) in direct project investments. The initiative was jointly released by the National Development and Reform Commission and the National Energy Administration.
The roadmap sets out 21 key measures, including expanding the use of energy storage in power generation and grid systems, boosting technological innovation, improving standards, nurturing skilled professionals, and deepening international cooperation.
The initiative aligns with China’s broader goals of advancing a green, low-carbon transition and supporting high-quality economic and social development.
Official data shows that by the end of 2024, China’s installed capacity of new-type energy storage had already reached 73.76 million kilowatts.
