UAE’s first quantum-secure communications testbed launched in Abu Dhabi

emirates7 - ADGM, ADGM Academy (ADGMA), the Technology Innovation Institute (TII), Hub71, and ASPIRE have jointly unveiled the UAE’s first testbed for quantum-secure communications—an initiative aimed at strengthening digital infrastructure against future cyber threats. The project explores how quantum technology can be harnessed to transfer ultra-secure data.

As part of this effort, TII—the applied research arm of Abu Dhabi’s Advanced Technology Research Council (ATRC)—has implemented its proprietary Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) system within ADGM, the emirate’s international financial centre. This marks the first deployment of such a network in a commercial setting, serving as a “living lab” for unbreakable, tamper-proof communications. It provides stakeholders with the opportunity to engage with an operational QKD system, test real-world applications, and better understand the potential of next-generation cybersecurity solutions.

Facilitated by ASPIRE, ATRC’s innovation accelerator, the initiative connects cutting-edge research with real-world application while encouraging cross-sector collaboration.

For ADGM, the deployment reinforces a proactive strategy to tackle cybersecurity challenges and bolster the resilience of its digital infrastructure. By piloting quantum-safe communication systems, ADGM is laying the groundwork for the secure financial infrastructure of the future, particularly for digital asset companies operating in its jurisdiction.

The testbed comprises a three-node QKD network linking multiple ADGM sites, with quantum devices installed at each location. These devices generate encryption keys for a protected network layer, ensuring communications are safeguarded against current and future cyberattacks—including those from powerful quantum computers expected to emerge in the near future.

Salem Al Darei, CEO of ADGM Authority, said: “Abu Dhabi and ADGM remain committed to leading in digital security and innovation. Our partnership with TII and other strategic players reflects this dedication. QKD is not only a technological breakthrough but also a vital step in strengthening trust in the digital infrastructure that underpins financial markets.”

Dr. Najwa Aaraj, CEO of TII, added: “This initiative represents a significant step in turning advanced research into real-world impact. By deploying quantum-secure communications in a commercial environment, we’re showcasing the readiness of this technology while enabling the UAE’s innovation ecosystem to prepare for the quantum era.”

Stephane Timpano, CEO of ASPIRE, highlighted: “The testbed offers industry a first-hand look at the benefits of quantum-secure communications. We applaud ADGM’s leadership in adopting this technology and TII’s role in developing a world-class solution. ASPIRE is proud to have supported this collaboration to bridge research and practical outcomes.”

Mansoor Jaffar, CEO of ADGM Academy and Research Centre, said: “This milestone reflects our commitment to advancing knowledge and driving innovation. The UAE’s first Quantum-Secure Communications Test Lab not only advances technology but also enables the development of secure, future-ready financial systems. By uniting academia, industry, and innovators, we are creating a platform to transform quantum research into scalable solutions.”

Ahmad Ali Alwan, CEO of Hub71, added: “Hub71 is dedicated to accelerating the adoption of frontier technologies that strengthen Abu Dhabi’s global innovation standing. Supporting the development of quantum-secure communications aligns with our mission to empower startups and expand access to advanced technologies. This collaboration highlights the strength of Abu Dhabi’s ecosystem and our shared ambition to reshape digital infrastructure.”
